Completing a drug and alcohol rehab program is an accomplishment, however, the road to recovery does not end there. Many addicts come to understand that “Recovery “is a lifelong process, and a 30-day stay is not going to cure your addiction. If anything, staying sober inside a drug and alcohol treatment center is easy. No matter how far down the path of addiction you have gone, a life in recovery is achievable. Life after drug and alcohol rehab is possible and a person recovering from an addiction will benefit from a transitional period between rehab and life. One of the best ways to make that transition is to move into a sober living home. This is what addiction professionals call “aftercare” or “continuum of care”.

What is Aftercare?

Aftercare is a continuum of care of support and counselling/recovery once a person has completed a drug and alcohol rehab center. There are different levels of aftercare ranging from Extended Aftercare to Sober Living. For example, a resident might require more treatment after completion of rehab and could be recommended to move into an Extended Care program. These types of programs often resided their residents in a sober living home but have additional structure and accountability in place for their success. Some aftercare specializes in failure to launch adults while others are geared towards dual diagnoses. Which type is the best will depend on each person’s needs.

What are some of the benefits of Aftercare?

Accountability

Many addicts are hearing this word for the first time. Accountability is a life skill that many Texas drug rehab centers introduce to their clients during their stay. Building accountability usually start small with minor tasks like making your bed every day, showing up on time to group, and following the rules. During recovery addicts learn to take responsibly for their actions. After being discharged from a high structured environment it is in the best interest of the addict to move into a structured Texas sober living home.

Healing the Family Relationship.

Addiction tears families apart. This is a family disease and the effects are endless and often untreated on the family part. A recovering addict’s family will be one of the most important factors in their success. Many parents and family members enable their addict. Leaving no option but for them to move into sober living after treatment may be a tuff decision for the family but it is in the best interest of the addict. Aftercare will attempt to repair broken bonds, lost trust, anger, and hate, and help return a family to a loving, caring, supportive, and trustworthy state.

Successful Aftercare.

Recovery is a lifelong process. Relapse often occurs within the first 60-90 days after leaving rehab. Which is why long term aftercare is so important. Additionally, roughly 50 percent of people who enter rehab will relapse. Aftercare programs understand the important of ongoing treatment and usually provide continuous support, recovery coaching, accountability, guidance, counseling, and a safe sober environment.
