Intensive in-patient treatment is only the first step of recovery. Most people believe that they can be completely free of addiction when they finish the 90-day detox programs or 150-day detox programs. However, the truth is much different.

The real challenge lies in combating the urge to use and abuse substances. It could be anything from the most readily available legal alcohols, controlled substances like weeds, or even completely illegal substances like crystal meth. Whatever the addiction, recovery is a long & shaky path.

Recovery From Addiction is a Shaky Path

Once you come out of the intensive care from the detox centers, the bigger challenge is to avoid relapsing into addiction. It could be harder for people to face than the completely controlled environment of detox centers. Inside the detox centers, you will be under continuous monitoring. This will keep control of your behavior.

However, when you are outside, the only thing that can keep you sober is your personal accountability.

Personal Accountability is the Key to Complete Recovery

You will be able to dodge answering uncomfortable questions when others ask those. If you are the person who is asking yourself the question, then you can’t lie. This is why personal accountability is important.

There are many ways to maintain it. For example, you can call & speak daily with a family member or friend. In the call, you can say about how you stayed sober that day and how you overcame the urge to get back to the old ways. This builds a positive reaffirmation in your mind and helps you to maintain high self-esteem and self-confidence.

Live in a Peer Supported Environment – Sober Living

Another easy way to stay true to yourself is to surround yourself with people who are sailing on the same ship. That is when you get peer support from those who are recovering from addiction, the power of together helping you to stay accountable to yourself.

In fact, most people who come out of in-patient treatment choose a sober living home to make the recovery smooth. Unlike detox centers, sober homes don’t have clinical supervision. At the same time, it is a quasi-controlled environment.

The home will be free from any alcoholic or addictive substances. You will also have the option of periodic testing for alcohol and other substances. People facing similar issues will be able to help you with their experiences and positive words.

Regular Journaling Helps in Maintaining Accountability

Another simple way to maintain positivity and accountability during recovery is to write journals during recovery. When you journal about the processes each day, it gives you the necessary willpower to stay sober. In fact, you can have three separate journals that you can write daily. In one journal, you write about the positive things that happen each day. In another, called the gratefulness journal, you can write about the things that you are thankful for. Finally, you can write daily about the perfect life that you want to live. This way, your mind is tuned to stay positive & free of drugs.
