In today’s increasingly digital world, it seems that there is an app available for just about anything imaginable, whether it be for checking your home security system cameras while away on vacation, managing your grocery shopping list, or even filing an on-the-spot car insurance claim after an accident. Whether you are new to sobriety or have been on the wagon for years, sober apps have become increasingly popular for those who choose to live a drug and alcohol-free life[1].

While there is no substitute for professional medical, detox, and rehabilitation services, below you’ll find information about five apps that can help you manage and maintain your sobriety whenever and wherever you need it.

1. I am Sober

I am Sober is a free app that allows the app user to track their number of sober days, weeks, and months, and it also helps them form new healthy life habits by providing motivation and a means of support along the way. You can learn from the experiences of others in sobriety in the I am Sober community and share techniques or tactics that have worked for you as well[2]. The app also includes a daily pledge to remind you that sobriety is a day-by-day struggle.

App Features:

  • iOS and Android compatible.
  • Sobriety calculator that details how much time and money you’ve saved to date by choosing to remain sober.
  • Milestones tracker to keep you updated on important recovery goals that you’ve achieved.
  • Trigger alerts to help you recognize potentially harmful behavior patterns.

2. Nomo

Nomo is a unique and useful free app that was created not by a company or an organization but instead by a man in recovery who wanted a way to help maintain his own sobriety. The app’s key feature is its use of multiple sobriety clocks which users can set with their own sobriety dates and individual addiction issues to help track their personal progress.

App Features:

  • Encouragement Wall with positive reminders from the community.
  • A search feature to help locate an accountability partner/s, along with a private messaging option.
  • Milestone awards, including chips that you can collect to celebrate each achievement.
  • Games and exercises to help you refocus when you experience a craving or temptation.

3. Sober Grid

Sober Grid is a free social networking app that connects its users to other members who are also in recovery via a worldwide sober support community. The app also allows you to connect with new friends in recovery during your everyday life or even while traveling, as you can search for users by name and geographic location to help find friends nearby or in other cities that you might be exploring at the time. The developers of Sober Grid describe it as ‘a safe place to share everyday thoughts, experiences, and struggles associated with sobriety and addiction recovery.'[4]
