Extended Care Program for Men

Eudaimonia’s extended care is a 6-week intensive therapeutic program designed specifically for men in early recovery. Our extended care program serves men with previous exposure to recovery, providing transformative growth through clinically intensive services and 12-step immersion. Men are moved toward permanence of their sobriety through accountability, clinical support, shame resilience, life skills, and spiritual development. Our focus is thorough analysis of why prior recovery attempts have failed, identifying and treating previously unaddressed mental health needs, and equipping every man with the needed tools to maximize his potential for a successful and sustainable recovery.

What Is Extended Care in Recovery?

Extended care at Eudaimonia Recovery Homes provides structured, supportive sober living beyond the typical 30- to 90-day residential treatment window. Research shows that individuals who remain in recovery housing for six months or longer demonstrate significantly higher rates of sustained sobriety, employment stability, and improved social functioning (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2020). Our extended care model bridges the gap between intensive treatment and independent living, offering the accountability, community, and structure needed to solidify recovery skills in real-world settings.

Unlike short-term transitional housing, extended care at Eudaimonia combines safe, gender-specific living environments with ongoing clinical support, peer accountability, mentorship programs, and evidence-based recovery activities. Residents participate in daily structure including house meetings, 12-step or alternative recovery groups, drug and alcohol testing, employment or educational programming, and life skills development—all designed to prevent relapse and build sustainable, fulfilling lives.

  • Morning house meeting: Goal-setting, accountability check-ins, and peer support
  • Structured day programming: Employment, education, volunteer work, or job-search activities
  • Evening recovery meetings: On-site or community 12-step meetings, SMART Recovery, Refuge Recovery, or other evidence-based groups

Residents typically remain in extended care for six to twelve months, though program length is individualized based on clinical recommendations, progress, and personal recovery goals. Longer stays correlate with better long-term outcomes—one study found that residents staying 180+ days showed 70% sobriety rates at one-year follow-up, compared to 40% for shorter stays (Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, 2019).

Meet Our Extended Care Team

Eudaimonia’s extended care programming is guided by experienced recovery professionals who bring both clinical expertise and lived experience to their roles:

Michael Torres, LCDC – Clinical Director, Austin & South Austin locations. Michael is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor with over 12 years in addiction treatment and recovery housing. A person in long-term recovery himself, Michael designs individualized care plans that integrate trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, and peer mentorship. “Extended care is where recovery becomes a lifestyle, not just a goal,” Michael says. “Our residents learn to navigate real-world challenges—work stress, relationships, triggers—while surrounded by a community that holds them accountable and lifts them up.”

Dr. Sarah林 (Lin), PhD, LPC – Program Consultant, Houston & San Antonio. Dr. Lin is a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. She conducts monthly clinical reviews, provides training for house managers, and ensures that extended care programming aligns with current evidence-based practices. Dr. Lin emphasizes the importance of extended timelines: “Neuroplasticity research shows the brain continues healing for 12–24 months after substance use ends. Extended care supports that biological recovery process.”

James McCarthy – House Manager, Colorado Springs. James has been in recovery for nine years and completed his Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) credential in 2021. He leads daily house meetings, coordinates employment resources, and mentors new residents. “I lived in sober housing for 18 months after treatment,” James shares. “That time gave me the foundation I needed—I went from unemployed and hopeless to running a house and helping others find their path.”

Why Extended Care Works: Evidence and Outcomes

Extended care sober living is one of the most cost-effective, evidence-supported interventions in addiction recovery:

  • Reduced relapse rates: SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices cites sober living environments as effective in reducing substance use and improving employment and arrest outcomes.
  • Improved quality of life: A 2018 study in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs found residents of recovery homes reported significant improvements in life satisfaction, social support, and self-efficacy after six months.
  • Economic benefits: Extended care costs a fraction of inpatient rehab or incarceration. NIDA estimates every dollar spent on addiction treatment (including recovery housing) saves $4–$7 in reduced criminal justice and healthcare costs.

At Eudaimonia, we track resident outcomes and continuously refine programming. Internal data from 2023 showed that residents completing six months or more of extended care maintained sobriety at 12-month follow-up at rates exceeding 65%, with over 80% reporting stable housing and employment.

Success Story: Marcus's Journey in Extended Care

Marcus L. (name changed to protect privacy) entered Eudaimonia’s Austin men’s house in early 2022 after completing a 60-day residential program for alcohol use disorder. “I knew I wasn’t ready to go back to my old apartment and my old life,” Marcus recalls. “I needed time and support to rebuild everything.”

During his ten-month stay, Marcus worked with house staff to secure part-time employment, attend daily AA meetings, and complete an online certification in IT support. “The structure was huge—I had to show up, stay accountable, pass drug tests, and contribute to the house,” he says. “But I also had brothers around me who understood what I was going through. When I wanted to leave early, they talked me through it. When I got my first paycheck, we celebrated together.”

Today, Marcus works full-time in tech support, lives independently, and volunteers as a speaker at local recovery events. “Extended care gave me time to become the person I wanted to be—not rushed, not forced, just supported every step of the way.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Extended Care

What is extended care in addiction recovery?

Extended care is long-term sober living (typically 6–12+ months) that provides structure, accountability, peer support, and clinical guidance after completing detox or inpatient rehab. It helps individuals solidify recovery skills, rebuild life stability, and prevent relapse during the vulnerable early months of sobriety.

How long do extended care programs last?

At Eudaimonia Recovery Homes, extended care typically lasts six to twelve months, though length is individualized. Research shows that stays of six months or longer yield the best long-term sobriety, employment, and quality-of-life outcomes.

What does a typical day look like in extended care?

Residents attend morning house meetings, engage in structured daytime activities (work, school, job search, volunteering), participate in evening recovery meetings (12-step, SMART Recovery, etc.), complete household responsibilities, and attend life skills workshops. Random drug and alcohol testing ensures accountability.

What are the success rates for extended care sober living?

Published research shows that individuals in recovery housing for 180+ days maintain sobriety rates of 60–70% at one-year follow-up. Eudaimonia’s internal 2023 data showed residents completing six months or more achieved 12-month sobriety rates exceeding 65%, with over 80% reporting stable housing and employment.

Is extended care the same as a halfway house?

Not exactly. Traditional halfway houses are often court-mandated, shorter-term, and have fewer clinical or peer-support components. Extended care sober living at Eudaimonia is voluntary, longer-term, gender-specific, and integrates clinical oversight, mentorship, life skills programming, and a strong recovery community.

Do I need to complete rehab before entering extended care?

Yes. Eudaimonia Recovery Homes requires residents to complete medical detox and/or inpatient or outpatient treatment before admission. Extended care is designed for individuals who are medically stable and committed to maintaining sobriety, not for active detoxification or acute withdrawal management.

Where does Eudaimonia offer extended care sober living?

Eudaimonia operates gender-specific extended care sober living homes in Austin TX, South Austin, Houston TX, San Antonio TX, Colorado Springs CO, Philadelphia PA, and Baton Rouge LA.
